Plates

The addition of artwork increases the cost depending on the amount to be applied to the pottery.

Saucers

Designed to fit under tea and coffee cups, it is to accommodate tea bags and teaspoons.

Bread and butter Plate (side plate)

5-7 inches in diameter. For bread, butter, or small side dishes. Also called a side plate or quarter plate, this small plate is placed to the upper left of the fork setting.

Dessert Plate

6-7 inches in diameter. For small desserts, snacks, or small courses.

Salad Plate

7-8.5 inches in diameter. For salads, appetizers, or fruit. At a formal meal, the salad plate is brought to the table after the main course is cleared.

Luncheon Plate

9-9.5 inches in diameter. A smaller lighter, simpler meal plate, often used for casual lunches or lighter meals. While not essential for all formal dinners, it is sometimes used for an appetizer course.

Dinner Plate

10-12 inches in diameter, with 10.5 to 11 inches being a modern standard. Used for main courses.

Charger Plate

12-14 inches in diameter. Primarily only used in formal settings. A decorative base plate, usually not eaten from, that sits under the main dinner plate. It is placed before the diners arrive and is not used for serving food directly. It is removed from the table, along with the soup plate or bowl, after the soup course or the first course is finished.

Bouillon Bowl

4-5 inches in diameter. A small, delicate cup with one or two handles, used for serving clear broth or consommé. The broth is typically drunk directly from the bowl after a single sip from a spoon is used to test the temperature.

Soup or Noodle Bowl

5-7 inches in diameter, 16-22 ounces. For serving soup or noodles.

Wide Rimmed Soup Bowl / Plate

9-10 inches in diameter with a well of 6-7 inches across, and 8-12 ounces in capacity. A wide, shallow bowl with a flanged rim, used for the soup course at formal dinners.

Demitasse Mug

3-3.5 inches in diameter, 2.25-2.5 inches in height, holding about 1.5-3 ounces of liquid. A small mug use with a saucer for serving strong coffee like espresso or warm after-dinner nightcaps.
